Greece is becoming a prominent European destination for Indian tourists, according to the latest findings from travel and tourism data intelligence provider Mabrian.
This was revealed during the world’s most prestigious travel and tourism event, World Travel Market (WTM) 2024, in London. Greece’s increasing appeal for Indian tourists was highlighted at the event.
The “India Market Insights: Outbound & Inbound” report was presented at a panel by the World Travel & Tourism Sustainability Council. It outlines key factors driving this trend and provides valuable data on Indian tourists’ preferences and perceptions.
India’s expanding travel market: A growing opportunity for European destinations like Greece
Mabrian’s report highlights the huge potential of India’s tourism market. By 2030, up to 100 million international trips are expected out of India. This staggering statistic is comparable to the annual number of visitors to France, making India one of the most vital outbound travel markets worldwide.
According to Carlos Cedra, a representative of Mabrian, the development represents a unique opportunity for European destinations to adapt their offerings to the needs and preferences of Indian travelers.
“The potential of India’s travel market is impressive: by 2030, the outbound market could reach 100 million international trips, a number comparable to the entire annual visitor numbers of France,” noted Cedra, emphasizing the scale and importance of this market for Europe.
Mabrian’s data reveals a significant increase in Indian tourists visiting Greece, with an 18.3% YoY increase in 2023. Greece’s rich cultural heritage and unique tourism offerings have played an important role in this growth. The uptick in interest makes Greece an exciting alternative to the traditional Southeast Asian destinations.
Meanwhile, immersive cultural experiences motivate Indian travelers. Greece’s extensive cultural offerings, outdoor events, and historic sites align well with the interests of this market. This picture suggests that Greece’s cultural and outdoor tourism products are particularly attractive to Indian visitors.
Top factors shaping Greek tourism demand among Indian travelers
There are certain factors of the Greek tourism industry that make Greece particularly attractive for Indian tourists. Among these are:
- Cultural Tourism: In 2023, cultural experiences accounted for 35.8% of demand among Indian travelers to Greece. Italy closely followed at 35.7%.
- Family-friendly activities: Family activities account for 10.5% of demand, highlighting the importance of family travel for Indian tourists.
- Shopping: With 9.9% of Indian travelers interested in shopping experiences, Greece’s retail offerings play an important role in its appeal.
Other aspects such as wellness and nightlife are less of a priority for Indian tourists in Greece, with wellness recording 2.9% and nightlife 7.1% interest. This shows a preference for cultural and family activities over relaxation or nightlife experiences.
The positive perception of Greece among Indian travelers
The report also analyzed Indian tourists’ perceptions of Greece, revealing high satisfaction scores in key areas such as:
- Climate Perception: Greece scores 92.2 points for its favorable climate, marking it as a preferred destination among European options.
- Safety Perception: With a score of 81.1, Greece ranks as a safe and secure destination for Indian travelers.
Furthermore, Greece’s superb climate and overall safe conditions, coupled with its cultural offerings, make it an attractive destination for Indian travelers. To further benefit from this market, Greek tourism operators could focus on enhancing product satisfaction and creating tourism experiences more aligned with the preferences of Indian tourists.
By understanding the diverse needs of this growing segment, Greece can cement its position as a leading European destination for Indian tourists. The Mabrian report provides a roadmap for Greek tourism authorities and businesses to tailor their offerings and enhance experiences for a high-potential market segment that can reshape global travel trends over the next decade.
