The body of British presenter Michael Mosley was found on the Greek island of Symi, rescue workers confirmed on Saturday.
His body was discovered in a rocky area of Agia Marina, north of the town of Pedi, where he was last seen in a CCTV video.
His body was spotted by Eleftherios Papakaloudoukas, the mayor of Symi, and a group of journalists who were combing the area of Agia Marina on a boat.
The British presenter appears to have taken a dangerous path through the rocky mountain terrain on his way down to the beach of Agia Marina. He likely either got dizzy or passed out due to the intense heat. He could have slipped and fallen near the fence, causing him to lose his life.
“The features and the clothes he was wearing show that it is him. Police and Coast Guard forces have arrived at the scene,” said Deputy Mayor of Symi Nikitas Gryllis in speaking to MEGA.
Earlier, Papakaloudoukas had questioned how anyone could survive in the 40 degree Celsius heat on the day Mosley disappeared. He added the area Mosley is believed to have traversed is “difficult to pass” and is “only rocks.” It is also populated by “loads” of snakes, he said.
“Instead of following the road to Gyalos, he seems to have preferred to go around the port, in Pedi,” the mayor told Proto Thema. “We do not know what this man might have had in mind.”
“Either he went to Agia Marina (a beach north of Pedi) which is a very difficult path and the prevailing weather conditions were over 40 degrees Celsius at that time, or he preferred to climb this whole mountain which is difficult, and go to Gyalos. If that was his choice, it was a big mistake,” he concluded.
Mosley disappeared on Wednesday
Michael Mosley disappeared under mysterious circumstances on Wednesday. For the past five days, a massive search and rescue operation was launched to detect his whereabouts.
He was last seen by CCTV at a grey-stoned house beside the harbor in Pedi wearing a pair of shorts, a blue polo shirt, a baseball cap, and sunglasses. He was holding a black umbrella to protect himself from the sun.
He may have walked along a steep uphill concrete road. At the end of the street, a small path leads into the rocky landscape with little vegetation beyond thistles and dry grass.
He had arrived on Symi on Tuesday. Symi is part of the Dodecanese islands in the Aegean Sea. He was there for a weeklong trip. He told friends at Agios Nikolaos beach on Wednesday afternoon that he would walk back to his accommodation in Symi town, local authorities said.
The walk is about two miles, depending on the route taken. When hours had passed with no sign of him, his wife, Clare Bailey Mosley, reported him missing to the police.

The 67-year-old is known for appearing on television programs like This Morning and The One Show. He also hosts the “Just One Thing” health podcast for the BBC.
Mosley is credited with the rising popularity of the 5:2 diet for losing weight, which involves fasting for two days per week.
He was one of the presenters of the series Trust Me, I’m a Doctor on the BBC.
