Greece won two more medals on Sunday at the European Rowing Championships 2023 in Bled, Slovenia, thanks to the efforts of two renowned Greek rowers.

Evangelia Anastasiadou and Olympic gold medalist Stefanos Ntouskos faced fierce competition to win silver medals in Lightweight Women’s and Men’s Single Sculls respectively.

Also on Sunday, Evangelia Fragkou and brothers Dimitrios and Zisis Boukouvalas finished in the 4th positions in the Women’s Single Sculls Final B and the Men’s Pair Final C respectively.

On Saturday, Greek athletes Dimitra Eleni (Milena) Kontou and Zoi Fitsiou took the silver in Lightweight Women’s Double Sculls, while Petros Gkaidatzis and Antonios Papakonstantinou took the bronze in Lightweight Men’s Double Sculls.

Rowers’ battle to win medals for Greece

Renowned Greek rowers Anastasiadou and Ntouskos battled hard to be crowned European champions in Bled but both finished second in their races.

Anastasiadou had established a strong lead in the second half of the race, but the reigning world and European Champion, Romania’s Cozmiuc, started to pile the pressure on the Greek sculler as they approached 1500m.

In the final quarter of the race, the Romanian began to pull ahead, so Anastasiadou had to settle for silver.

Ntouskos also flew off the starting blocks but the early lead went to Dutch sculler Lennart van Lierop. Reigning world champion, Germany’s Oliver Zeidler, soon made his move and was just 0.46 seconds behind Ntouskos at the 500m marker. Into the second quarter of the race, Zeidler moved into the lead ahead of Ntouskos with van Lierop sitting in bronze medal position.

At 1,000m it was still so close with Ntouskos challenging Zeidler every single stroke, and in the third quarter of the race, the Greek sculler took the lead once again. In the final quarter of the race, though, van Lierop overtook both Zeidler and Ntouskos to win gold.

Greek rowing athletes’ major previous achievements

The new generation of Greek talent are showing that Greece can become a dominating presence in the aquatic sport.

Anastasiadou had again won the silver medal for Greece at the European Rowing Championships 2022 in Munich. Before that, she won gold in the European Under 23 Rowing Championships in 2020.

Ntouskos, on the other hand, had not only won the gold medal at men’s single sculls in rowing at the Tokyo Olympics, but also set a new record at the Games with his time.

The Olympic champion had previously also competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, in the men’s lightweight coxless four, finishing in the sixth place.

Ntouskos’s Tokyo gold was Greece’s first Olympic rowing gold medal.
