Music legend Tina Turner died at the age of 83 on Wednesday in Switzerland. The famous singer was known for soul classics and pop hits like The Best and What’s Love Got to Do With It.

Turner had been suffering from several health issues in the years prior to her death, including cancer, a stroke, and kidney failure.

“Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland,” said the late singer’s spokesperson in a statement on Wednesday.

“With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model,” the spokesperson added.

The US-born music star was one of the greatest female rock performers, beloved by fans for her energetic on-stage presence and powerful vocals. She released a long lineup of hits including The Best, Proud Mary, Private Dancer and What’s Love Got to Do With It.

Music career

Turner first found success in the music industry with her then-husband Ike Turner in the 1960s. Classic songs like ‘River Deep and Mountain High’ were immensely popular and propelled the pair to stardom.

However, not all was well with the couple and Turner was subjected to domestic abuse by her husband. In 1978 they divorced, although their record label, United Artists, released two more studio albums attributed to the pair.

A film starring Angela Bassett released in 1993 documented Turner’s struggle with domestic abuse. The movie resonated with audiences and critics and received three Oscars.

During the 1970s, Turner’s music received less mainstream attention, but in the following decade, her career enjoyed a resurgence when she signed on with Capitol Records.

In 1984, Turner released the album, Private Dance. It was a massive hit and sold over 10 million copies, propelling Turner into superstardom.

Some of Turner’s best-known songs were included in the album, such as What’s Love Got to Do With It, and I Can’t Stand the Rain.

Turner’s most iconic song is arguably The Best, released in 1989 as part of the Foreign Affair album. It was a cover of the original song by Bonnie Tyler.

In the hours since the iconic singer died, several high-profile stars have paid tribute to Tina Turner and shared their memories.
