Tom Hanks expressed his strong conviction in a recent interview that British actor Idris Elba should be the next James Bond, succeeding Daniel Craig, who most recently portrayed the suave spy in the 2021 film ‘No Time to Die’.
Hanks said, “James Bond has a license to kill. I would issue that license to Idris Elba just based on the work that I’ve seen him do.
More support for Idris Elba
Idris Elba has gained support from another esteemed actor, Pierce Brosnan, who also believes that Elba would be a fitting choice for the role of James Bond. However, Elba himself has expressed some uncertainty regarding the matter during media interviews.
Despite being associated with the role for more than ten years, the actor has recently refuted claims of harboring a genuine interest in taking on the iconic character. Elba reportedly said, “It is not a goal for my career.”
He further said, “I don’t think that, you know, playing Bond will satisfy some of my personal goals. It will definitely satisfy the will of a nation. I’m not gonna lie, every corner of the world I go, and I’m talking about different cultures, they always go ‘Bond,’ and I feel it is beyond me at this junction. It’s beyond me. You know, it’s not a question of, should I, do I, will I. It is what the will of the nation dictates sometimes.”
Elba’s refusal to portray James Bond
Back in February, Idris Elba dismissed the possibility of portraying James Bond. During that period, Elba was actively promoting the transition of his renowned character, Luther, from the small screen to the grandeur of cinema in the film “Luther: The Fallen Sun.”
Elba said, “We’ve been working on the TV show for about 10 years and so the natural ambition is to take it to the big screen, and so we’re here with the first movie.”
He continued, “You know, a lot of people talk about another character that begins with ‘J’ and ends with ‘B.’ But I’m not going to be that guy. I’m going to be John Luther. That’s who I am.”
Expected release of the next Bond film
According to Michael G. Wilson, a prominent producer associated with the James Bond franchise for a significant period, a new Bond film is not expected to be released for at least two years. However, he revealed that the process of searching for the next Bond actor has already commenced.
In recent years, numerous names have been speculated upon for the coveted role. Nevertheless, Wilson emphasized the production team’s inclination towards selecting experienced actors over younger talents.
Their objective is to find individuals with a seasoned presence to embody the iconic character. Wilson said, “We’ve tried looking at younger people in the past.” He further said, “But trying to visualize it doesn’t work. Remember, Bond’s already a veteran. He’s had some experience. He’s a person who has been through the wars, so to speak.”
