Snapchat announced at its annual developer conference that it would make its GPT-powered AI chatbot available to every user for free.

The company hopes to differentiate itself from Instagram and TikTok by offering unique features such as expanding access to its AI chatbot, emphasizing the difference between public and private posts, and rewarding successful creators with a share of the revenue generated by their viral content.

The AI chatbot, known as “My AI,” is initially available only to paying members of the Snapchat+ subscription service. However, it will now be accessible to all users and will appear as another contact within the app.

Features of ‘My AI’

Like ChatGPT, the ‘My AI’ service can answer factual questions, provide creative content, and engage in two-way conversations.

Jack Brody, Snap’s vice president of the product, said that the new feature aligns with the company’s mission to help users express themselves, learn, and have fun.

The move represents an effort by Snapchat to establish itself as a distinct player in the social media landscape.

Users will now have the option to include My AI in their group chats, allowing them to ask the digital assistant any questions that arise during their conversation. Brody explained that paying Snapchat users will also have the ability to send pictures to their AI assistants and receive images that were completely generated by the AI in return.

He also stated that the idea behind this feature is that users can take a photo of My AI, and the virtual assistant can snap one back. During the initial stages, most of the experiences are merely for amusement, experimentation, and entertainment purposes.

Nonetheless, there are numerous opportunities to make this an advantageous feature as well. For example, sending a picture of ingredients to My AI can result in receiving a recipe in return.

Controversy over ‘My AI’

My AI first faced criticism when it was first launched in March. To test its suitability, a reporter from the Washington Post pretended to be a 12-year-old and asked the AI for advice on how to plan a surprise trip with a 30-year-old boyfriend, with the intention of having sex for the first time. The AI gave cheerful advice, which further fueled the controversy.

However, the company has taken steps to improve the product. Brody explained that the app will now be more careful in providing age-appropriate advice. During the trial period, the company addressed some of the issues that arose and made changes, including adding age awareness.

The company claims that the AI now adheres to its community guidelines in 99.5% of cases, and hopes it will continue to provide only helpful and appropriate advice to all its users now that the paid trial period is over.
