Video game fans will be able to construct their own ancient Greek city in the upcoming strategy sandbox game Builders of Greece.

The upcoming title is being published by CreativeForge Games and developed by
BLUM Entertainment and Strategy Labs. It is scheduled for release sometime in the third quarter of this year.

According to the video game’s Steam page, fans will have the chance to immerse themselves in politics, economics, and city planning within the setting of ancient Greece.

The game, which is yet to receive an exact release date, invites players “to witness the greatness of Hellenic metropolises before the time of Roman conquests.”

Builders of Greece is a city management game which lets you display your strategic and economic mastery,” reads the description of the anticipated title on Steam, one of the most popular video game digital distribution services online.

According to the developers, players will have to consider “the nuances of planning, politics, and economics” if they wish to excel.

The title, which will be available on PC, will include mechanics for architecture, trade, public order, diplomacy, and politics. The trailer also shows examples of combat, where players will have to defend their polis (city) from rivals.

The Steam page for the video game also hints at the presence of famous ancient Greek philosophers who may be drawn to players’ cities if they are able to muster enough wealth and prestige.

The developers of the game are also working on other upcoming titles, similarly set in the ancient or mythical past. Builders of Egypt will feature comparable game mechanics to Builders of Greece. As the title suggests, the game will be set in ancient Egypt rather than ancient Greece.

For players keen on a city management game in a more mythical setting, City of Atlantis is also expected to release soon. The game is set in Atlantis, the island civilization mentioned in the famous allegory by Plato.

Video games set in ancient Greece

Over the last several years, video game companies have been using Ancient Greece as a backdrop in visually spectacular new creations. Owing to the rich history of Greek antiquity, the setting is ideal for game developers looking to entice players.

One of the most popular titles is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which is set during the Peloponnesian War. The game, which blends history with fantastical elements has been lauded for its attention to detail, particularly in regard to the recreation of ancient urban spaces like Athens and Sparta.

Another popular video game series that often depicts ancient Greece is the Total War series, developed by the Creative Assembly. Titles in the series like Total War: Rome II feature a plethora of historical ancient Greek polities like Macedon, Athens, and Sparta as playable factions.

The game also features lesser-known factions like Massilia (modern-day Marseille), Syracuse, and Cimmeria, which were important ancient Greek colonies in antiquity. Moreover, the Wrath of Sparta DLC allows plays to relive the Peloponnesian War in a campaign that focuses more exclusively on the ancient Greek world.
