World’s Largest Pizza Breaks Guiness World Record

Pizza lovers have cause to rejoice, the world’s largest pizza has been unveiled in Los Angeles! Pizza Hut teamed up with YouTube star Airrack (Eric Decker) to produce the truly colossal pizza.

The Guinness World Record-breaking pizza was produced as a PR stunt to celebrate the return of Pizza Hut’s “big New Yorker”, a cheese and pepperoni pie with foldable slices.

The record-breaking culinary marvel amounts to 13,990-square-foot (1,300 meters) and is accommodated by the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The world’s largest pizza

Preparing the world’s biggest pizza was a tremendous challenge. Workers assembled layers of dough first before adding tomato sauce and toppings. Due to the enormity of the pizza, the pieces were baked separately.

The finished product consisted of 13,653 lbs (6,193 kg) of dough, 4,948 lbs (2244 kg) of tomato sauce, over 8,800 lbs (3991 kg) of cheese, and approximately 630,496 pieces of pepperoni.

The previous record for the world’s largest pizza was set in 2012. A group of Italian chefs baked a 1,261.65 square meter pizza, dubbed “Ottavia”. The Ottavia was 100 percent gluten-free.

Pizza Hut CEO David Graves told the press that the new record breaker would not go to waste and that the pizza slices would be donated to local food banks to help those in need.

No one out-pizzas the hut,” joked YouTuber and co-creator of the pizza Eric Decker on Twitter.

“From now on we only go by record breakers,” tweeted Pizza Hut alongside a picture of Deckers standing next to the humongous pepperoni pie, “Shout out to @airrack for helping us with the WORLD’S LARGEST BIG NEW YORKER.”

Pizza Passion

Pizza has been the subject of several Guinness Book of World Records attempts. One notable successful effort was in 2017. A group of US-based companies and one Italian firm teamed up to create the world’s longest pizza, which stretched for 1,930.39 meters (6,333 ft 3.60 in).

Pizza challenges are also popular at a local level. The Raffaele Pitsa & Pasta restaurant in Thessaloniki went viral when they offered to reward any group of four who were able to devour a giant pizza with a €100 voucher.

The behemoth of a pizza weighs seven kilograms, has a perimeter of 3.2 meters, and has a diameter of one meter.

Greeks have also been the brains behind other pizza-related innovations. Sotirios “Sam” Panopoulos dared to defy conventions and added pineapples to pizza back in the 1960s and thus, the infamous Hawaiian pizza was born!

Ever since, the Hawaiian’s defenders and detractors have continued to fiercely debate whether pineapples do indeed belong on pizza. Thankfully for pizza lovers, the world’s largest pizza is far less likely to rouse such a controversial culinary battle.
