A gigantic pizza challenge in Thessaloniki has gone viral. The second biggest city in Greece is known for its cuisine. It is, for example, particularly famous for its sweets. That, however, is not the reason. Rather, it’s the pizza’s gigantic size.

The cheesy monster weighs seven kilograms, has a perimeter of 3.2 meters, and a diameter of one meter. The prize for a group of four eating is a hundred euros. The challenge went viral after they put it up on social media.

The now famous “Raffaele Pitsa & Pasta” has three stores across Thessaloniki. They are located in Euosmos, Toumba, and Polixni. All three places invite visitors there to enjoy their specially crafted gigantic pizza.

Thessaloniki’s viral giant pizza challenge

Specifically, the challenge that has gone viral is when a group of four people try to eat the gigantic pizza to win a one hundred euro voucher. It takes place in three of the pizzeria’s stores. The group of four that makes the best time in each store then wins.

The pizza is baked in an oven especially made for it. A group of fifteen people can eat it with relative ease. Contestants in the challenge must pre-order to allow time for its preparation. Once they arrive, it is divided into four equal parts.

One of the best flavors is Pizza Burrata, says the owner. It comes with tomato sauce, burrata cheese, cherry tomatoes, and arugula.

Nikos Karageorgos, manager of the business, was also the initiator of the idea. He stated that the idea for creating the gigantic pizza came on the pizzeria’s seventh anniversary of its opening.

“On the occasion of the completion of seven years since the day the business opened, I [decided] to do something special and different,” he said. “The challenge came about as an idea for a celebration in stores. I wanted to do something unusual.”

Karageorgos also stressed that the lifting of measures in the hospitality business played an important contributing role in coming up with the challenge.

“We wanted…things [to be]…better to get closer to our friends again,” he revealed. “That’s why I thought of such a large pizza for many people. People like extravagance in food, they want to be impressed, and this is achieved.”

Still a chance to win

The pizzeria is still looking for a group of four to win the challenge. “There was a person who ate half a pizza by himself,” says Karageorgos. “The winning group of four has yet to been found.” The challenge on the company’s profile on Facebook and Instagram accounts reads:

Birthdays is not the only reason for celebrations in Thessaloniki, however, as today marks its liberation from the Ottoman Empire. Its International Film Festival also begins on November 3rd with Steven Spielberg’s latest The Fabelman’s opening it up.
