Damar Hamlin, an NFL player, collapsed with cardiac arrest during a primetime game of American football.

The incident occurred during the first quarter of a game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals. Hamlin, who plays for the Buffalo Bills, collided with another player and collapsed.

Hamlin received medical care for over half an hour on the pitch before he was taken to a local hospital. The NFL suspended the game about an hour after the incident.

Cardiac arrest incident during NFL game

The incident occurred during an NFL match at a stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio. When Hamlin tackled Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tee Higgins, the latter’s helmet seems to have hit Hamlin’s chest. Hamlin rose after the tackle but then immediately collapsed.

Medics rushed out onto the field to deliver care for Hamlin. He was given CPR and oxygen. Players from both teams gathered around the downed American football player as medical staff were working on saving his life. Many of the players were visibly upset.

Television footage of the NFL game reportedly broke off as the incident unfolded. The crowd at the Cincinnati stadium remained silent.

“Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game versus the Bengals,” wrote the Buffalo Bills NFL team on Twitter. “His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition.”

Hamlin’s condition

The NFL player is said to be in critical condition after suffering cardiac arrest. According to Jordon Rooney, Hamlin’s representative, “His vitals are back to normal and they have put him to sleep to put a breathing tube down his throat. They are currently running tests. We will provide updates as we have them.”

According to a medical professional who spoke to CNN, the next twelve to twenty-four hours are critical for Hamlin’s recovery. “The primary concern is the length of time that he was not having cardiac activity,” Dr. Anthony Cardillo said. “Every second counts.”

Cardiac arrest is a sudden loss of heart function, accompanied by a loss of breathing and consciousness. It is often caused by a problem with the heart’s electrical system, which prevents the heart from pumping blood to the rest of the body.

Reactions

NFL fans and others in the sport have responded to the incident with an outpouring of support for Hamlin.

“We have been in touch with Bills and Bengals players and with the NFL. The only thing that matters at this moment is Damar’s health and well-being,” the league’s players’ association said in a statement.

Buildings across Cincinnati were lit up in blue, the color of the Buffalo Bills, on Monday evening, as a sign of support for Hamlin.
