Argentina beat Croatia 3-0 in the semi-final of the World Cup in Qatar on Tuesday to progress to the final of the competition on Sunday. They will play against the winners of the France-Morocco game taking place on Wednesday.

All it took was a five-minute stretch late in the first half for Argentina to score a quickfire double to land their place in the World Cup final. They’d later add a third for a comfortable 3-0 victory over Croatia.

Despite seemingly having hamstring issues during the match first half of the match, Lionel Messi was able to score from the spot before Julian Alvarez scored an insurance goal in the thirty-ninth minute.

With a goal and an assist, Messi has taken the lead in the Golden Boot standings from Kylian Mbappe, but this game was as much about Messi’s supporting cast as it is about his pursuit for the World Cup.

Croatia has had a strong tournament and should be proud of the team’s performance, but on this day, Messi’s pursuit of a World Cup title has taken center stage.

Argentina on course for third World Cup

On Friday, Argentina defeated the Netherlands in a penalty shootout (4-3) to progress to the semi-finals of the World Cup after a dramatic evening of football in Qatar.

It was the nation’s fifth World Cup semi-final after previous semi-appearances in 1930, 1986, 1990, and 2014. Argentina won the world cup twice—once in 1978 and again in 1986. They have been runners-up three times in 1930, 1990, and 2014.

La Albiceleste came into this tournament as favorites having gone a streak of thirty-six matches unbeaten.

However, despite wishing to extend their record to thirty-seven to equal that of Italy’s, Leo Messi and team unexpectedly lost their first match of the group stage with a score of 2-1 to 51st-ranked Saudi Arabia in one of the most shocking games in FIFA World Cup history.
