A fire broke out in the area of Gaia in Evia in the municipality of Kimi-Aliveri on Saturday.

Greek authorities ordered the evacuation of the village of Kremastos as the flames approached houses nearby.

The Fire Service says that high winds make it difficult to contain the blaze.

Some 24 firefighters with ten fire engines and a ground team are being assisted by two water-bombing planes, a helicopter, and municipal water tanks.

Large parts of Evia were destroyed by the 2021 fire

The environmental devastation from the fires in northern Evia was enormous, according to the meteorological service of the National Observatory of Athens (NOA).

According to the NOA, a total of 126,023 acres (51,000 hectares or 510,000 stremmata) have been burned.
