United Airlines will commence with its seasonal direct flights to and from Athens, Greece and the New York/Newark hub starting in May, the company said on Monday.

The direct flights will run to the very end of October while the airline said it would also initiate its seasonal direct flight from Washington DC’s Dulles airport on May 7th.

United has been offering direct flights to Athens each summer since 2016.

Athens International Airport Communications & Marketing Director Ioanna Papadopoulou said that the United States market showed great resilience even throughout the pandemic, and remains one of the airport’s most popular and significant markets, thanks in large part to the sizeable and active Greek-American community.

United Airlines’ Director of Sales for the UK, Ireland, Israel & Off-line Sales, Bob Schumacher, expressed the company’s “enthusiasm of returning to Athens in 2022 with the restart of direct flights from Greece to the US.”

The flights to the United States, he said, are supplemented with connections to over 95 destinations over the entire American continent. The daily two-way flights will be carried out by Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes, he said.

This summer, American airlines will operate 14 direct flights every week between eight large US airports and Athens, Greece, as the country eases its coronavirus travel restrictions.

Where can I catch direct flights to Greece?

Year-round, New York City’s Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is the only North American airport that offers direct flights to and from Greece; Emirates and United offer flights out of Newark.

In early March, New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) joins Canada’s Toronto’s Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Montréal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) in offering North Americans a direct link to and from Greece; Delta offers flights out of JFK, whereas YYZ and YUL are served, primarily, by Air Canada.

In early April and through to October, Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD) offers direct flights to and from Greece. By early April through to September, Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) becomes the sixth airport in North America to offer a direct route to Greece; American Airlines offers flights out of ORD and PHL.
