The Top Ten Greek Wines

Greek wines are famously considered some of the best in the world, and Greece is home to a number of varieties found only in the country.

After over fifty thousand wine lovers and experts participated in the voting, Botilia.gr, a Greek wine retailer, has released its definitive list of the top ten Greek wines of 2021.

The wines were ranked by both the score they received from users, as well as their total sale numbers for the year.

Voters on the site were only permitted to rank wines that they had purchased and tasted so that the rankings would be as accurate as possible.

The Greek wine that came out on top is Cuvee Monsignori, which is from the Argyros Estate in Santorini. This particular wine, which is of the Greek variety “Assyrtiko,” has won international wine competitions and is highly regarded amongst wine enthusiasts around the world.

The second Greek wine on the list is Bucephale from the Ligas estate, which is a dry red wine called “Xinomavro” that has been aged for eighteen months. This particular Greek wine is highly sought-after amongst top chefs for their own restaurants.

The third best Greek wine of the year is Reserve from the Alpha estate, another of the xinomavro variety. It is aged for twenty-four months and then bottled and aged again for a year. This wine has also won international awards for its exceptional quality.

9. Rilancio Sangiovese from the Karypidis Estate
10. Agadio Day Five from the Jima Winery

Wine from Greece is historic, world-renowned

Greeks are amongst the first peoples in the world to have produced wine, and Greece has some of the oldest vineyards extant, making the country justifiably famous for its great local wines.

The earliest evidence of wine production in Greece dates back to 6,500 years ago. Wine from Greece enjoyed high prestige in the times of the Roman Empire and during the Middle Ages, and highly prized wines were exported from Crete, Monemvasia, and other Greek ports.

Today, as wine making has become a fine art, there are certain Greek wines that stand out from other international ones. For the most part, however, Greece continues to produce numerous varieties traditionally, and some vintners make wines that keep one foot in tradition and the other in innovation.

What remains constant, however, are specific grape varieties and places with unique types of soils, which lend to the grapes’ characteristics unmatched by any others.
