The General Assembly of the United Nations unanimously adopted Greece’s resolution on the return of cultural property to its rightful owners in a plenary session on Monday.

The resolution that was proposed by Greece, was titled “Return or restitution of cultural property to the countries of origin.” Greece has been campaigning for the return of its cultural heritage, including most notably its Parthenon Marbles, which are being held by the British Museum, for centuries.

The Greek Foreign Ministry stated in a Tweet Tuesday that the country’s three-year resolution had the support of an unprecedented 111 nations.

The resolution was adopted by the Plenary Session of the UNGA.

Most Britons agree Parthenon Sculptures belong in Greece

Meanwhile, the Parthenon Sculptures currently exhibited at the Museum should return to Greece, the majority of Britons say in a new poll.

Two articles published in British newspapers The Daily Telegraph and The Guardian directly support arguments for the return of the precious marbles to their home.

The reports came only after Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited London and raised the issue in his meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

A public opinion poll by pollsters YouGov shows that 56 percent of participants stated that the Parthenon Sculptures should be exhibited in Greece, while only 20 percent said they should remain in the United Kingdom, according to the Daily Telegraph.
