A Greek police lieutenant allegedly destroyed his boss’s car in what is thought to be a revenge attack on Rhodes island on Sunday.

Stunned passersby recorded a video of the man seemingly taking out his frustration on the car owned by police chief Michalis Kaliorakis before storming upstairs into the police department.

The officer in question had a history of clashing with his boss, according to reports.

There have been heated disputes between the two men which apparently led to the lieutenant being placed into psychiatric evaluation by his superior. Many are calling these events the motive for the man’s alleged subsequent attack on Kaliorakis.

On this fateful Sunday morning, the Greek police officer drove his four by four to his place of work on Rhodes Island before ramming his vehicle into his boss’ personal car — three times, according to eyewitnesses.

Up until this incident, the police officer had still been actively employed at the station and was serving as secretary for the department.

Conflict at the station escalates

Eyewitnesses were left with their mouths gaping as they saw the disgraced police officer exit his car purportedly wielding a sledgehammer, which he then took to Kaliorakis’ car.

In photos from the scene, there seem to be at least three large holes made by the sledgehammer in the front windshield of the victim’s car.

Things continued to escalate even following these events as the officer continued on his pursuit by entering the police department and climbing the stairs to the first floor.

Kaliorakis’ office is located on the first floor, and it seems that the lieutenant was headed there to confront him. There were two other police officers also present in the building who were able to give their account of what occurred when the perpetrator entered the department.

The two officers who were witnesses to the confrontation described the man as “out of control” to a prosecutor. He allegedly flew off the handle at the police director, insulting and threatening him. According to reports, he then broke the glass surrounding Kaliorakis’ office using the same sledgehammer with which he had just finished breaking the man’s car window.

The perpetrator’s colleagues were eventually able to calm him down and stop him from causing more damage; however, he was found to be carrying a loaded service pistol on him at the time. His fellow police officers were able to disarm the man before he could use the lethal weapon.

An official statement released by the regional police says that a criminal case against the policeman has been filed.

“The General Regional Police Directorate of South Aegean announces that a police officer serving on the island was arrested in relation to an incident which caused some damage which occurred this morning at the headquarters of the First Dodecanese Police Directorate in Rhodes.

“A relevant criminal case was filed against him and at the same time the procedure for the administrative investigation of the case is underway.”
