The National Organization for Public Health (EODY) reported that a total of 2,293 new cases of the coronavirus were diagnosed on Wednesday, and 53 more people had died, which brought the death toll of all those who had succumbed with the disease to 11,587 since the beginning of the pandemic.

On Tuesday, a total of 2,802 individuals had been diagnosed with the disease.

The number of those who had passed away with the coronavirus is ten fewer than the previous day, Tuesday, when 63 people had succumbed with the disease.

The total number of all those who have been diagnosed with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic — including all those who have recovered from it — is now 383,558.

The total number of patients being treated by intubation rose to 642 on Wednesday, up from 639 the day prior; their  average age was 67.

The EODY announced that authorities had conducted a total of 53,183 PCR and rapid antigen tests over the past day, with the positivity rate rising to 4.31% from Tuesday’s rate of 3.98%.

In addition, the average age of those diagnosed with the coronavirus dropped from 40 years to 39 this past week, according to Greek Health Minister Vasilis Kikilias, who spoke to the press on Wednesday during a regular briefing, while noting there were 2,040 infections on average for the last seven days.

As of May 18, Greece has 2,905,212 citizens, or 15.6% of the population, who have been fully vaccinated, with 27.1% citizens having had at least one inoculation against the coronavirus.

This is far above the vaccination rate of many European nations but slightly lower than the rates seen in Great Britain, where 30.8% of the population is now fully vaccinated. In the United States, more than 45% of American adults are now fully vaccinated, according to data recently released by the CDC.

The increased coronavirus vaccinations have helped boost reopening efforts, and the return to a pre-pandemic normal is gaining speed. Last week, the CDC announced that there as no longer any need for Americans to wear masks outdoors. However, in most states there are still rules regarding the wearing of masks indoors, especially in restaurants and bars, unless the patron is seated.
