A team of law students from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki won gold and bronze medals at the 2020 International Mediation Singapore Competition, according to the final results released on Saturday.
A total of 400 competitors in 48 teams from universities around the world took place in the competition, in which participants are judged on their ability to mediate theoretical disputes between two parties.
The teams are judged on both their ability to effectively resolve conflict through mediation, and the degree to which they have advocated and accounted for the needs of the two parties in the dispute. The scenarios in the competition are all based on today’s most pressing international conflicts.
The Greek team, represented by students Vasiliki Festa, Dimitra Karakioulaki, and Elisavet Gklavini, won big at the competition, taking home the gold medal for the “Mediation” portion of the competition as well as the bronze medal for the “Mediation Advocacy” section.
Due to Covid-19, the competition took place virtually, adding an entirely new level of difficulty to the already taxing event. “it was an anxiety-inducing process, and the technical issues raised our adrenaline levels,” admitted Gklavini, referencing some problems the team faced with the competition’s online platform, in an interview with AMNA.
The Greek team gained valuable experience from the virtual event, as it “opened a window to the world for us, and allowed us to have conversations with people from all around the world,” Gkalvini said.
The team’s many capabilities, depth of knowledge, and oratory skills have taken them to competitions around the world. Last year, they won first place at the Ad hoc Negotiation Competition Dubai in the UAE.
