Covid Vaccine Will Be Free of Charge for All Greeks, PM Mitsotakis Says

Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis promised on Friday that the coronavirus vaccine, when made available in 2021, will be provided free of charge to all Greek citizens.
Speaking during a teleconference on the coronavirus vaccination strategy, Mitsotakis emphasized that the vaccine is a public good and it is the government’s obligation to provide it free of charge.
“I insist on the free access of all Greek men and women to the vaccine, because this government from the beginning treated the vaccine as a public good. That is why it will be available for free to everyone, without exception,” he said.
He added that more than 25 million doses of the vaccine will be provided to Greece following the pre-purchase contracts signed by the European Union with pharmaceutical companies. The first deliveries are expected in early 2021.
Mitsotakis called on all political parties to participate in the National Vaccination Committee, which will determine the schedule and the procedures for mass vaccinations.
“It is very important to convince our fellow citizens that the vaccine will not only be effective, but also safe,” he maintained.
He warned, however, that news of the vaccine should not lead to complacency.
“The exact opposite must be done. Now that we know there is light at the end of the tunnel, now that we are almost certain that, in the first half of 2021, we will have achieved a sufficient level of vaccination, now we should be stronger and more focused to observe the protection measures,” he said.
