Greek health officials announced 156 new Covid cases in the country on Monday. This includes nine cases diagnosed in the overcrowded migrant camp Moria on the island of Lesvos.
The country recorded five new deaths with the virus in the last twenty-four hours.
Of the 156 new cases, just 13 were discovered at testing points along Greece’s borders and other points of entry.
Since the first recorded coronavirus case in February, the total number of cases in Greece has reached 11,663, including all those who have now recovered.
Authorities were alarmed when a 40-year-old migrant in Moria tested positive for the virus last week, and the camp was placed under quarantine.
Officials have long feared an outbreak of the coronavirus in Moria, where the severely crowded conditions and poor hygienic conditions make social distancing and other anti-infection measures impossible.
These recently-confirmed cases could possibly lead to a disastrous spread of the virus that would be difficult or even impossible to contain, as the camp is home to over 12,000 people — more than four times its capacity.
Anti-mask rallies
For the first time, crowds of un-masked demonstrators gathered together in major cities around Greece on Sunday to protest the mandatory use of face masks in schools around the country.
Schools will open next Monday, September 14th. The Greek governmental authorities have ruled that all students and teachers must wear masks in both outdoor and indoor areas of schools.
Greece’s Minister of Health, Vassilis Kikilas, urged those that believe children shouldn’t wear masks to think about the children currently struggling with serious health conditions in Greece’s hospitals.
Many of these young patients have been wearing masks for quite some time to protect themselves from disease.
