The Parliament of Egypt has voted its approval for the recent maritime deal signed by Greece and Egypt in Cairo, setting into law the mutually-agreed-upon boundaries of the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) of the two countries in the Eastern Mediterranean.
According to Greek media reports, the agreement was approved by the constitutional and legislative committee of Egypt’s House of Representatives on Monday.
The sea areas in question are thought to contain substantial reserves of oil and gas. Turkey, which frequently sends its own oil and gas exploration vessels into the Eastern Mediterranean, has blasted the agreement, calling it null and void.
The Greek government’s alternate spokesperson, Aristotella Peloni, told interviewers from Skai TV that the Greek Parliament is set to ratify the deal, along with a similar agreement Greece made several months ago with Italy, this week.
