Late Afternoon Bouzoukia: How Covid-19 Has Changed Nightlife in Greece

Nightclubs across Greece are implementing new health and safety measures, including limited hours and social distancing, in order to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.
The effort comes in the midst of newly imposed government mandates, meant to address the growing number of Covid-19 cases. Health officials are requiring establishments across the country to follow safety guidelines to help contain the growing numbers of people who have been infected with the virus.
As a result, music venues and clubs in popular regions across Greece have announced that they will be limiting their programs to the afternoon while closing at midnight.
One such popular nightclub in Thessaloniki, named “Orama,” was opened from 8:00 pm. to midnight, featuring popular artist Nikos Vertis.
Those who had made reservations at the establishment were informed by staff to arrive half an hour early. Employees wore masks and antiseptics were on all tables and public areas throughout the venue.
Vertis himself went on stage around 9:30 pm, with the singer politely asking the audience to follow safety measures and to have fun, saying “I want to ask you to have fun as much as you can and as you feel, but let’s not forget the security measures. It will pass.”
While emergency mandates were initially only required for certain regions across Greece, the government has extended its implementation to all parts of the country.
Greek nightlife has drastically changed in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Bouzoukia and various other establishments continue to look at new ways for patrons to partake in listening to live musicians and entertainment, while also being mindful of the pandemic and carrying out health and safety protocols. Entrepreneurs are also trying to figure out ways to help mitigate potential financial loss.
The government’s emergency mandates are scheduled until Monday, August 31. Clubs are prohibited from operating from 12:00 am. midnight until 7:00 am.
