The epic Afghanistan war film “The Outpost”, which premiered on streaming and VOD on July 3, has been a smash hit since the July 4 holiday weekend.

Starring Orlando Bloom, Scott Eastwood, and Caleb Landry Jones, “The Outpost” was a co-production between Millennium Media and York Films, led by John Kalafatis, Joanna Kalafatis, and Andreas Ignatiou. John and Joanna, as well as Tommy Vlahopoulos, were credited as executive producers on the film.

The movie is based on a book by Jake Tapper which depicts one of the deadliest battles of the Afghanistan War. Directed by Academy Award nominee Rod Lurie, special attention was paid to recreating the horrible conditions of the battlefield and making sure army life was depicted realistically.

Rated #1 on iTunes and with a Rotten Tomatoes score of over 90%, “The Outpost” has so far garnered rave reviews from not only audiences, but also publications like The Hollywood Reporter, The Washington Post and Rolling Stone.

When asked if he knew the movie would be a hit, John Kalafatis, who also owns York Studios, said, “It made sense to me because of the incredible level of directing and acting in the film, and the fact that it’s based on a true story. I think especially with a lot of the uncertainties in our nation right now, people made it a hit because they want to see and enjoy true heroism and role models, which are desperately needed.”

Variety said, “‘The Outpost’ represents the most exhilarating new movie audiences have been offered since the shutdown began”. Referring to the film’s action-packed climax, Rolling Stone said, “Your nerves will be shattered, guaranteed.”

This first feature for York Films was previewed at Thessaloniki International Film Festival, and is currently available on iTunes, Amazon, and other VOD services. As for York’s future plans, John said York is entertaining two new features to co-produce with Millennium Media, most likely also based on true stories.
