Greek Candidate Runs on Diverse Ballot in Munich Elections

A ballot that represents the new face of Munich will vie for power in the March-15 municipal elections in the German state of Bavaria.

The name of the ballot is “Zusammen in Bayern” or ZuBa, which means ”Together in Bavaria.” It brings together people from different ethnic backgrounds and political ideologies but who have a common goal: to better represent the mosaic of peoples who now live at the heart of Europe in Bavaria.

Athanasios Bakatsounis, a well-known member of Bavarian society who works as a doctor and oncologist, is also a candidate on the new ZuBa ballot.

The candidates who are participating in this effort have different ethnic origins, representing the multicultural society that Bavaria and Germany, in general, has become since the end of World War II.

Germany is now home to even fourth- or fifth-generation immigrants, most of whom are either of European, Turkish, Middle Eastern or African descent.

However, political representation in Germany usually lacks the dynamic multi-cultural and multi-national aspect of its society, something that the ZuBa ballot aims to change.
