Greece’s most recent winter storm, dubbed ”Hephaestion,” which brought extensive snowfall, frost and extremely forceful winds to many parts of Greece, is now gradually moving eastward and away from the country.
The Aegean islands of Tinos and Andros were left without electricity on Tuesday as a result of the inclement weather.
Τhe two power lines which connect these islands of the Cyclades archipelago with the Greek mainland were badly damaged as a result of the harsh weather conditions experienced in the broader area.
Approximately 20,000 permanent residents of these two islands were left without power for several hours, while crews from the Greek Electricity Distribution Network Operator DEDDIE attempted to repair the damage.
It is still unclear exactly how the power lines had been damaged, but the area had been battered by extremely strong winds and persistent storms over the last several days.
Power cuts were also observed on the island of Euboea (Evia) in the municipalities of Eretria and Kymi.
The island of Crete will continue to receive large amounts of rain and snow throughout Tuesday as well, before the storm eventually moves off and gives way to brighter and warmer conditions.
Meanwhile, many parts of Greece’s southeastern mainland remain covered in snow, with provincial roads in parts of Euboea, Boeotia, Attica and their neighboring counties still closed.
