Just a few hours after the expulsion of the Libyan Ambassador to Greece, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis escalated the tone of Greece’s verbal condemnations of the recent agreement between Turkey and the acting government of Libya.
”The texts quoted by Ankara on maritime zones have neither legal effect nor ratification prospects,” the Greek Premier stated. He also said the map was “unhistorical” because the Greek Islands were removed from it, and that they move because has “led Turkey to unprecedented diplomatic isolation.”
The Greek Prime Minister noted a long list of countries which have already condemned Turkey’s agreement with Libya, saying that ”the United States, Russia, the EU, Egypt, and Israel condemned Turkey’s stance within two days.”
”Even within the framework of NATO, which has always maintained a neutral stance on the issue of our differences with Turkey, powerful countries criticized the attitude of the neighboring country,” Mitsotakis noted.
”First among them was the French President Emmanuel Macron, who tried to block the aggression of our neighbors,” the Greek Prime Minister stated.
Yesterday, the Turkish Parliament ratified the agreement, which disregards the EEZ of some of Greece’s islands, among which is the large island of Crete, claiming that Ankara has “maritime borders” with Libya.
