U.S. State Secretary Pompeo: We will Not Let Turkey Proceed with Unlawful Drilling

“There are limits, we cannot let anyone, Turkey, make unlawful drilling,” said U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a joint statement after meeting with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias in Athens on Saturday.
The U.S. official made the statement to the press after the meeting with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias at Greece’s foreign ministry. He was referring to Turkey’s violation of Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
“We understand the risks, we know the activities that are taking place, and we work very closely so that these issues are not militarized and de-escalated. There are limits. We will not allow anyone, Turkey, to make unlawful drilling, “Pompeo said.
On Saturday, Turkish Energy Minister Fatih Donmez said that drilling ship “Yavuz” would soon begin drilling southwest of Cyprus.
When asked whether the U.S. will take action in regards to Turkey’s aggressive behavior, Pompeo said that the U.S. would take initiatives to ensure that Turkey’s actions are lawful and adhere to International Law.
“We have made it clear that business in international waters is done according to international rules. We have told Turkey that actions in international waters are unacceptable and we will take diplomatic initiatives so that all actions that are to being taken are lawful” Pompeo said.
