Meeting Between Greek PM Mitsotakis and President Trump Cancelled

The scheduled Tuesday evening meeting between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and US President Donald Trump was cancelled after US Democrats opened a formal impeachment inquiry into the president over allegations he sought help from a foreign power to damage a political rival.

Shortly before the scheduled meeting on the sidelines of the 74th United Nations General Assembly in New York, the president returned to Trump Tower for “executive time” to watch Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announcing a formal impeachment inquiry.

President Trump denies any impropriety occurred, and he called the efforts “witch hunt garbage.”

The row was sparked by reports an intelligence whistleblower lodged a formal complaint about a phone call Trump made with Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky.

What exactly was said between them remains unclear, but Democrats accuse Trump of threatening to withhold military aid to force Ukraine to investigate corruption allegations against former Vice-President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

Trump has acknowledged discussing Joe Biden with Zelensky, but said he was only trying to get Europe to step up assistance by threatening to withhold military aid.
