The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority on Tuesday gave its approval to the first Unmanned Aerial System, or drone, to be manufactured in Greece.
The “Ouranos” drone, constructed by the Greek company Altus, is a fixed-wing system with the capability of flying up to 10 hours at a time.
The drone features a highly-advanced autopilot system and it can be easily configured with various payloads, offering a versatile unmanned solution for a variety of missions.
With a wingspan of 3.3 meters (nearly eleven feet), the Ouranos can fly to an altitude of 15,000 feet and has a range of 100 km (62 miles).
The drone can transmit real-time information in support of civil protection and public security services, including the monitoring of land and sea borders, supporting search and rescue operations and the fighting of forest fires.
The new craft’s airworthiness was certified by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority in cooperation with the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, according to European regulations which have established strict criteria for drones.
