Australian Injured in Athens Car Blast a Convicted Drug Trafficker

The man blown up in a car bomb in southern Athens on Friday was named as Amad “Jay’’ Malkoun, an exiled former leader of an Australian gang of bikers and convicted drug trafficker.

Malkoun, 56, was seriously injured when his white Mercedes exploded as he left the Mega Gym in Glyfada, an upscale seaside neighborhood.

The gym on Vouliagmenis Avenue is the same one frequented by John Macris, 46, who was shot dead as he climbed into his car in Voula, the neighboring suburb, on October 31.

Malkoun’s injuries included burns to his hands and feet. He underwent emergency surgery at the Asklipieio General Hospital in Voula, a town to the south of the Greek capital. Doctors said post-surgery he is in serious but stable condition.

Amad ‘Jay’ Malkoun fled Australia for Dubai in 2015

Last year, police in Australia said he was still an influential figure in the Comancheros gang, whose associates were involved in a factional war which was playing out on Melbourne’s streets.

In 2015, Malkoun reportedly fled from Thailand to Dubai, where his family had been living since he resigned as Comanchero president in 2013.

He had been questioned as a witness by Thai police in relation to the abduction and murder of international drug trafficker Wayne Rodney Schneider.

He arrived in Greece in 2017.
