Greek Coast Guard Rescues 29 Migrants in Northern Aegean

The Greek Coast Guard announced on Thursday that it has rescued 29 migrants found adrift on the sea between the island of Samothraki and the northeastern port of Alexandroupoli.
It is very rare for migrants to use this section of the northern Aegean to cross into Greece from Turkey.
The majority of migrants entering Greece illegally by sea from Turkey prefer the much shorter crossing to the eastern Aegean Sea islands.
The migrants were located aboard their small boat after Greek authorities received an emergency call reporting the vessel was in trouble.
Their nationalities were not immediately known.
Also on Thursday, police in the northeastern region of Thrace said they detained nine Syrian and Afghan migrants found packed into a car which was being driven west after crossing the land border from Turkey.
The driver, a twenty-year-old Syrian, was arrested on suspicion of smuggling people into the country.
