Greeks had an opportunity, along with most people around the globe, to watch a rare phenomenon in the early hours of Monday, the so-called “Blood Wolf Moon” and its eclipse.
Lunar eclipses can occur only during a full moon, and this one was extra special because it was also a “supermoon”. A supermoon occurs when the moon is full and closest to Earth in orbit.
Each month’s full moon has its own name, usually a term from the ancient past. January’s full moon is known as the “wolf moon,” possibly inspired by hungry wolves which howled outside of villages long ago. Native Americans have always called it the Wolf Moon, but other cultures, including the Ango-Saxon, may also have used the term, along with “The Moon After Yule”.
