Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu stated on Wednesday that would not be realistic to restart Cyprus talks before the European parliament elections, which will take place in May, 2019.
Speaking during a briefing to the Turkish Grand National Assembly’s foreign affairs committee, Cavusoglu expressed the view that a new process in Cyprus seemed unlikely, taking into account the fact that E.U. parliamentary elections were coming up.
He did not specify exactly how talks on Cyprus could be affected by elections which have no bearing on any individual country’s government.
The two leaders are currently engaged in “shuttle diplomacy” through the U.N. to establish possible “terms of reference” for the resumption of talks.
U.N. envoy Jane Holl Lute was on the island of Cyprus in December to meet both leaders separately, and she is due back sometime in early 2019.
