Two vessels with refugees and migrants sank in the Eastern Aegean on Sunday with Frontex and the Greek Coast Guard rescuing a total of 69 people.
The migrants were rescued in two separate locations, one of them being close to the island of Farmakonisi, while authorities arrested the captain of one of the boats for migrant smuggling.
Specifically, a Frontex patrol boat found a sunk rubber boat carrying 26 people in the marine area of the Lesvos airport.
The Frontex crew picked up the boat’s passengers who were transported to Mytilini port, while the 35-year-old foreign national captain was arrested.
Later on Sunday, the Hellenic Coast Guard found an inflatable motorboat southeast of Farmakonisi island.
The coast guard boat crew collected 43 people on board the inflatable and transported them to the Farmakonisi port.
