South Australia will once again celebrate all things Greek at Semaphore Beach in Adelaide. The 40th annual Delphi Bank Semaphore Greek Festival is on tap for the weekend of January 12-13, 2019.

Preparations for one of the largest Greek festivals in Australia have already begun, with organizers promising a weekend of traditional Greek fun. And again, as in the past 40 years, there will be no admission fee.

The expansive motto for 2019 is “More is MORE”. The volunteer organizers invite Greeks to “bring the kids, bring the pethera, bring the symbethera, bring the koumbara, the whole family.”

Thirty-five thousand people attended last year, so why not ask for even more this year?

This year, the Semaphore festival is paying a special tribute to its “soul”, saying “thank you” to its over 300 irreplaceable volunteers.

Highlights for this year’s festival are the band “Zeus” with special guest singer Hara Dimitriou, and “OPAcize”, a unique combination Greek dance and fitness. DJ Apostal, and local dance groups, competitions and performances round out the weekend’s entertainment.

And since fun cannot be had on an empty stomach, there will be plenty of gyros, lamb off the spit, Greek desserts and drinks.

Emcees will be George Diakomichalis and Theodora Maios, while Kyriakos Gold will host the virtual event on social media, using the hashtag #sema4greekfest.

John Douvartzidis, President of the Greek Orthodox Community of Port Adelaide, states that “Last year was one of our most successful festivals, with many thousands honoring us with their presence.

“Our festival has grown significantly and is now entering a new phase,” he added.

“For our 40th anniversary we promise something for everyone and, as Greeks do best, creating a great party atmosphere.” he said.
