Father Alexander Karloutsos and Presbytera Xanthi Karloutsos were the recipients of theĀ 2018 Athenagoras Human Rights Award, presented during theĀ Archon Weekend and Assembly of the Order of Saint Andrew during the weekend of October 26-28 in New Yrok City.

The annual event was held at the Hilton Midtown, with former U.S. vice president Joe Biden in attendance along with prominent members of the Greek Orthodox Church.

Father Alexander and Presbytera Xanthi were recognized for their exceptional service and devotion toĀ the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, and their beloved Dormition Church of the Hamptons, in addition to their extensive philanthropic work around the world.

The 2018 Archon Weekend drew a record attendance of approximately 1,300. This year’s focus was the ongoing effort to secure religious freedom for the mother church of Constantinople.

The weekend began with the presentation of the Nicholas J. Bouras Award for Extraordinary Archon Stewardship. This distinction was awarded to George E. Safiol, for his contributions to the church, the business world, the military, and the field of higher education.

The Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate are nominated by the Patriarch of Constantinople. They have been selected from among the laity based on their service to those sections of the Eastern Orthodox Church under his guidance.

The Order of Saint Andrew, comprising the Archons residing in North and South America, was established in 1966 under Patriarch Athenagoras, when Archbishop Iakovos conferred the honor upon thirty members of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. Upon induction into the “Order of St. Andrew,” the nominee swears an oath “to defend and promote the Greek Orthodox faith and tradition.”

The current Grand Commander of the Order is Anthony J. Limberakis, MD. Under his leadership, efforts have been made to secure religious freedom for the Ecumenical Patriarchate.
