President Anastasiades Asks Russia to Sway Turkey Over Cyprus

Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades asked Russia on Tuesday to exert its influence on Turkey so that peace talks on the island can resume.
Anastasiades met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly taking place in New York.
The President expressed his satisfaction at the “excellent” bilateral relations Cyprus maintains with Russia.
“We have raised a number of issues about which we believe that Russia can contribute, due to the good relations it maintains with Turkey. The Russians can exert influence in order to move the peace process forward,” Anastasiades told reporters after the meeting.
Asked about Moscow’s current stance on the Cyprus issue, the President replied that the aim is “finding a solution.”
