Police Arrest 8 People in Thessaloniki Violent Riots

Hellenic Police arrested eight people for the violent riots that took place in Thessaloniki during the rally against the FYROM name agreement on Saturday.
Two of the people arrested were minors, while 15 people were lightly injured during the clashes with demonstrators in the city center.
The rioters smashed shop windows, vandalized cars, destroyed sidewalks, and bus stops and set trash containers on fire other than attacking the riot police forces that intervened. Most clashes took place in front of City Hall, the White Tower, and the old seafront.
The protesters tried to storm City Hall, shouting slogans against Mayor Yiannis Boutaris and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. Police repelled them using tear gas and noise grenades. The rioters smashed several City Hall windows.
The skirmishes with police lasted almost three hours, with authorities opening the streets to traffic at 11:00 pm.
A total of 28 people were taken in but only eight were kept in custody, one of them for drug possession.
Charges of disturbing the peace, damage to public and private property, unprovoked bodily harm and resisting arrest were filed against them. The eight people will be taken to the Thessaloniki public prosecutor on Monday.
