Fires Still Burning for Second Day Across Greece

According to Greece’s Fire Department latest report, several fires continue to burn across Greece, the day after more than 60 people lost their lives and hundreds were injured in East Attica.
Most of the destructive fires are out, but authorities fear that some may rekindle. In particular, there are fears that the fire inĀ Geraneia Mountains, near the town of Kineta where dozens of homes were destroyed on Monday, may reignite.
As of Tuesday aftrenoon, firefighters continue to struggle against fires raging in:
Areas in the Geraneia Mountains near Kineta.
Kallitechnopolis near Rafina,Ā East Attica
Demeno area, Kiato, Corinthia
Metochi Vryson, Chania, Crete
Chlomo, in the Lokroi Municipality, Central Greece
Panorama of Agioi Apostoloi, Oropos Municipality in East Attica
Sousaki of Agioi Theodoroi, Corinth
Monday’s strong winds, mainly responsible for the rapid spreading of the wildfires, have eased down, making the firefighter’s work easier. Most fires are abating, but the fire department and volunteers remain on their toes for possible rekindling.
The Rafina – Pikermi Municipality, where MatiĀ is located, has sent 150 engineers to assess the damages after the fires. Public areas and buildings, hotels and other premises in the area are open to give shelter to fire-stricken families.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has declared a three-day mourning for the victims of the fires.
