Syria airstrikes spark Greek protests

As U.S. President Donald Trump said America was “locked and loaded” to strike more Syrian military targets, thousands of people protested in central Athens over airstrikes against the Bashar al-Assad regime.
Organized by the Greek Communist Party, demonstrators rallied in Syntagma Square and also picketed the U.S. embassy.
Communist leader Dimitris Koutsoumbas told the crowd “the imperialists once again spill the blood of the local people” and claimed evidence of chemical weapons attacks used to justify the British, American and French operation was “flimsy”.
In the early hours of Saturday morning, Britain’s Ministry of Defence confirmed four Royal Air Force Tornado warplanes accompanied U.S. and French jets struck “Syrian installations involved in the regime’s use of chemical weapons against its own people”.
Syria’s government is backed by Russia, and UN General-Secretary Antonio Guterres on Friday said the Cold War was “back with a vengeance”.
