The White House has asked U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign following allegations of improper conduct during her diplomatic tenure, according to an announcement Tuesday.
“We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well,” White House press secretary Katie Zacharia said during a briefing.
The decision follows allegations that Guilfoyle promoted a Greek energy company that had paid for her travel aboard a private aircraft while she was serving as ambassador.
Allegations of Improper Conduct
Guilfoyle has also faced allegations that she offered to assist a wealthy political donor in exchange for settling a $100,000 American Express credit card bill.
Her attorneys have denied any corrupt conduct, saying the payment concerned an outstanding debt owed by a former client from Guilfoyle’s professional activities before entering government service.
They said Guilfoyle had requested payment from the client but ultimately did not arrange introductions to administration officials.
Her legal representatives also maintained that her use of private aircraft while serving as ambassador complied with applicable requirements and had received State Department clearance.
White House Announces Departure
Guilfoyle, a former television personality and political fundraiser, previously had a personal relationship with Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son, to whom she was once engaged.
President Trump had recently indicated that his administration was considering removing Guilfoyle from her diplomatic position.
