Turks Dancing the Syrtaki Dressed in Blue and White Causes Storm (video)

Some Turks have become enraged at the sight of the Greek syrtaki being performed at a festival at the Kadikoy district of Istanbul.

The festival devoted to traditional dances from around the world was apparently organized by the local branch of Turkey’s main opposition party, the CHP (People’s Republican Party).

Many social media users pointed that the dancers were dressed in blue and white, the colors of the Greek flag.

Some said the dance routine was inappropriate at a time of heightened tensions between the two countries.

An official of the ruling AKP party grabbed the opportunity to slam their opponents.

“On the one hand, they [CHP] say that the Greeks captured 18 of our islands, while on the other they are dancing syrtaki and wearing Greek colors… We are looking forward to hear the reaction of [the CHP leader] Kemal Kılıcdaroglu,” a ruling party official was quoted as saying.

Last December, Kılıcdaroglu vowed to retake a total of 18 islands “occupied by Greece” in 2019, in a reference to the country’s elections in November.
