Lawyers Want Greece's Top Court to Hear Turkish Soldiers' Case

Former Turkish military personnel appear for court hearing in Greece

The asylum saga of eight former Turkish servicemen wanted by Ankara took another turn on Thursday with a request from a defense attorney to have their case heard by Greece’s top court.
An appeal by the defense team of one of the eight men was submitted to the Council of State, Greece’s supreme court. In it, a request was made covering all eight of the men who fled to Greece on the night of the July 2016 coup attempt in Turkey.
If accepted, the move will see a Feb. 15 hearing for one of the men postponed.
Turkey has repeatedly demanded Greece hand over the officers. A delegation from Turkey’s Justice Ministry was in Athens last month calling for their extradition.
The issue has been causing considerable stress in Greece/Turkey relations, especially given the fact that the eight men have applied for Greek political asylum.
A request by one of the applicants was granted by the courts in December, but the Greek government has since appealed the ruling, seeing the Turkish national returned to custody.
