Labor union members and riot police faced off in Athens on Thursday evening, on the eve of major nationwide industrial action.
Riot police were ordered to assemble at the front of a Finance Ministry building, where members of the Communist Party-affiliated All-Workers’ Militant Front (PAME) were picketing.
Protesters managed to display a banner on the building, dubbing it the ministry of “auctions, tax and robbery”.
The action follows a week of vocal and angry protests which has seen demonstrators barge their way into ministry buildings, confront Greece’s employment minister Efi Achtsioglou and assemble outside the heavily guarded residence of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras.
Greek transport workers and doctors in public hospitals will join seamen in a 24-hour strike on Friday, as unions escalate their opposition to a raft of proposed reforms going through the country’s parliament.
The reforms contained in a 400-article, 1,326-page bill are needed for the country to complete a third review of its bailout program.
