The Greek island of Antiparos is nestled in the center of the Aegean sea, only minutes away from the larger island of Paros. Despite its size, this small island is setting a trend due to its beaches, mild weather, and tranquil atmosphere even during peak season.
Although Antiparos is not that well-known, there are many things to do and see on the island.
Descend into the Cave of Antiparos
The Cave of Antiparos is on Agios Ioannis hill, in the middle of the island. 411 steps take you to the heart of the cave. Impressive natural formations shape one of the biggest caves in Europe. They say it might take up to 120 years for one centimeter of stalagmite to form. Some stalactites and stalagmites were mutilated by visitors in the past.
Wander around the Chora and the Kastro
Probably one of the prettiest choras (main town) in the Aegean is the Chora of Antiparos, dotted with traditional houses, colorful flowers, and many restaurants and grill houses.
The Kastro of Antiparos is a Venetian castle (1440), square and surrounded by traditional houses doubling as walls of the castle in itself. Only its circular tower is still standing today.
Walk, cycle or drive
About 39 square kilometers big, Antiparos has the right size for a short visit. Walking is a common but also bike rental is popular among visitors. However, if you prefer to drive, short distances allow cutting on gasoline expenses.
Visit the port
One of the best places to see is the port. Boats from Paros arrive every half hour, as do fishing boats.
Go shopping
In recent years, Antiparos has become the place to shop as trendy concept stores have emerged setting new fashion trends, and selling alternative souvenirs.
Sail the caves
Turquoise is the color that better describes sailing around Antiparos, especially on the coast of Agios Georgios. Volcanic formations have created coves, bridges, and caves where a dive is hard to resist.
Explore Despotiko
Right in front of Agios Georgios lies Despotiko, an uninhabited island. On Despotiko it’s possible to see many types of herbs and flowers. Significant archaeological findings give the island characteristics similar to the sacred island of Delos.
Swim all alone
On Despotiko it’s also possible to enjoy lonely beaches in complete silence. The beaches on Despotiko are not organized so it’s necessary to pack water and food to spend time there.
Wait for the sunset
In Antiparos, it’s a tradition to see the sunset in Sifneiko, also known as Sunset Beach. The café is close to the main square. Here, it’s possible to enjoy a cocktail while the sun goes down.
Try a local restaurant
Dining in Antiparos can be anywhere from dinner at a traditional taverna, to more sophisticated international options. The favorite local dish is having octopus by the seaside restaurants, in Agios Georgios beach.
