European Commissioner: Greek Bailout a ‘Scandal’ for Democratic Procedures

The Eurogroup’s handling of Greece’s bailout programme was a scandal in terms of democratic processes, Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici said in an interview with Corriere della Sera.
The French economist said that after eight years of crisis and tough austerity measures, the decisions of the eurozone finance ministers on the Greek rescue program were taken “behind closed doors” and democratic procedures were not followed.
“It is a scandal in terms of democratic processes, not because the decisions were scandalous, but because of deciding the fate of a nation this way, imposing detailed decisions on pensions, the labor market,” Moscovici told Corriere della Sera.
Moscovici also criticised the Eurogroup’s structure, hinting that the decisions made by technocrats lack transparency and accountability.
“I am talking about the basic details of the life of a country which were decided in a body, behind closed doors, whose work is being prepared by technocrats without the minimum control of parliament, without the media really knowing what is being said, without stable criteria, or a common guideline,” the EU official emphasised.
On Tuesday, Moscovici will meet with Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos in order to start the negotiations on the third evaluation of the bailout programme.
“The Greek programme is fair and the Economic Affairs Commissioner was aware of it,” European Commission Spokesperson Margaritis Schinas commented on Monday.
“The European Commission and Jean-Claude Juncker have always paid particular attention to the need to allocate the weight of the Greek programme equally and fairly,” he added.
