Humanitarian artist Salma Zulfiqar created the installation “Building Peace Though the Oceans” as a way to build “peace through the ocean – as a vehicle to promote debate about migrants, she recently told Greek Reporter.

The latest display of her educational installation which contains six canvases representing Asia, Africa, the Middle East, North America and Latin America show the financial contribution migrants have made and was created and exhibited as part of the International SEAS conference at The Ionion Arts & Cultural Centre, on the Greek island of Kefalonia.

This month the installation will be on display in Birmingham, United Kingdom, where it will be promoting the positive impact migrants have had in Birmingham and around the world. It will be exhibited at the Library of Birmingham between July 28 and September 30, 2017 and is being supported by Birmingham City Council.

Working closely with Arts in the Yard, debates will also be organized in Birmingham to promote integration of migrants as part of this art project.

The Motivation Behind the Art
While “Building Peace Though the Oceans” was on display at the Ionion Center for the Arts and Culture on Kefalonia, Salma used her educational art installation to help promote a positive dialogue on the impact of migrants in Greece and the crucial need to integrate them into society. She met with teachers from Kefalonia and discussed ways to better integrate the migrant children on the island in order to help prevent hate crimes as well as extremism.

Using her art work as a means to promote a constructive and positive environment to educate people about migrants and their impact on society is a personal project for Salma. Her parents were economic migrants, arriving in the UK in the 1960’s.

“I come from a migrant family and I know the hardships faced by migrants here in the UK and abroad,” she said in a press release. “Migrants and refugees face huge challenges in moving from one country to the next. Their hunger for survival makes them strive and that’s why they make important contributions in our societies,” she added.

Salma has witnessed the impact migration is having in different continents around the world through her humanitarian work with the United Nations and is using her artwork to highlight the importance of migrants in various communities.

She also has travelled to many countries including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria, Kenya, Chad, Cameroon, Egypt and Bangladesh to cover under-reported humanitarian issues, which have greatly influenced her work as an artist.

The exhibition in Birmingham will be opened by Jess Phillips Labour MP for Birmingham, Yardley and other special guests.

Date: 3PM – July 28, 2017
