Council of State Judges Throw Licensing Law Up in the Air

steJudges of the Council of State met for three hours to discuss whether the TV license tender introduced by the SYRIZA government was in accordance with the Greek Constitution. The appeals concerning the government’s decision to limit TV channels were accepted by the majority with reports that the 16 voted that the law was not constitutional and 9 voted that it was.
The majority, however, was not convinced by the placement of George Papageorgiou’s address in favor of the license law. Reports from within the third meeting by the Council of State to discuss TV licenses state that Papageorgiou had addressed judges afresh on Tuesday to support his positions.
Speaking in Greek Parliament, Government Spokeswoman Olga Gerovasili said that the government is proceeding with “determination and respect for the laws and institutions” regarding the law concerning television licenses. She said that “legality will prevail, despite those fighting rearguard action for the sake of vested interests.”
