Greek Officials Looking to Provide More Migrant Housing

refugees crowdThe Greek cabinet for immigration is looking to provide more housing for the 57,000 migrants and refugees currently residing in Greece, an official says according to reports.
Until now there are apartments or hotel rooms providing lodging for fewer than 7,000 migrants, which is far behind the projected goals the government set that originally had planned to have 20,000 migrants in proper dwellings by now.
On Tuesday the head of the task force that handles migration, Deputy Defense Minister Dimitris Vitsas, commented that he plans to close many of the state-run refugee camps on the mainland due to the dire living conditions of the camps under which the migrants are suffering.
Vistas pointed out that he will also aim to alleviate the overcrowded migrant camps on the islands. The island camps have been criticized by many humanitarian organizations as providing sub-par and even dangerous to the health of the migrants.
Some 10,000 refugees are living in the island camps waiting to process their asylum documents so that they can be transferred to the mainland.
