The Mysterious Ghost Town of Gavros

gavros 1There is great mystery surrounding the sleeping village of Gavros located in Kastoria in the Macedonia Region of Greece.
The entire village has been abandoned for some time, the last evidence of activity was left behind on some stamped concrete that seems to indicate that the village was still operational in the early 1950s. Beyond this proof of life, no one is certain exactly when or why the villagers decided to abandon Gavros, and then built a new village a few hundred kilometers away.

Some records indicate that the village was first settled a couple hundred of years ago, but the information is not confirmed.
Overgrown bushes and trees have become the new residents of Gavros over the past several decades. The village is laced with fruit and nut trees and random walls of structures have caved in on themselves or are left standing in piles.
gavros 2Located in the mountains, the villagers who once inhabited this viilage were said to have had various encounters with the wildlife that dwelled around them such as bears and snakes.
Nowadays, much mystery surrounds the abondoned village, which lends to the occasional tourist stopping to snap some photos of Gavros while they traverse the road that connects Prespa Lake to Kastoria.
